Take Project is an ongoing interactive public art project developed by Ashley Maxwell and Kelly Stevenson who currently are living and working in Atlanta Georgia.

Rather than large-scale, immovable public art, the ‘Take Project’ is art in the form of small sculptures that are given to the people for free.  These sculptures are unique products of the artist’s hand.  They typically are slip cast ceramic figures that range from 6 to 8 square inches.  These figures are the artist’s own interpretations of the human figure, rendered in the artist’s own style.  The artist then places the intimate sculpture in random indiscriminate locations where it is free for the taking.

The sculpture is found, taken and becomes the finder’s property.  When one comes across this object they will be intrigued by finding it in such an unnatural location.   They investigate; did someone leave it here by accident?  Who does it belong to?  Can they now take it? Finder’s keepers..  The owner of the piece can choose to investigate the information.  By choosing to act, they arrive at the “Take Project” networking page, where the individual discovers they have become a member of an interconnected, nationwide collaboration.  This is a forum for documenting and sharing experiences created by the Take Project.  Here they are welcome to upload photos of their piece of art living in its new environment and adding commentary, explaining where they found it, how far the piece has traveled, and what their initial thoughts were when they came upon the piece.

The Take project’s goal is to connect people and create a boundless community through the shared experience of free art.  It will exist on a local and national scale.
